As a midwife attending births for over twenty-five years, I have seen the difference that lifestyle changes can have on a pregnancy and subsequent birth, as well as the health of the newborn as it matures into adulthood. I have guided many families with the adage that pretty much everything has already been determined about the baby before their first prenatal appointment; all the DNA sequencing has occurred at conception, the hair color has been determined, the eye color, some even argue that the personality has already been determined. I have always said, there is only one way you can affect a pregnancy, once you have become pregnant, and that is by what you eat.
Over the years, I have broadened that statement, because I have realized that it is not just food that nourishes a mom and her baby. Nourishment comes in a variety of packages. I now say that the only way you can affect your pregnancy is by what nourishes you. The question then becomes What Nourishes YOU? Yes, food is nourishment and it is vital during the process of pregnancy, but there are many aspects to nourishment. During pregnancy there is a window of opportunity for change. This is a time when motivation is high for change.
